summary

The Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil Remodeling Project, commissioned to KYK Architects, is a renewal of an existing building located in one of Seoul’s most iconic cultural and fashion districts.
Garosu-gil, known for its gingko tree-lined streets, unique boutiques, cafés, and youthful vibrancy, served as both the inspiration and design foundation for this project.
The remodeling concept sought to embody the area’s distinct identity—blending its elegant charm, artistic character, and contemporary urban culture.
To achieve this, the architects explored the spatial and visual qualities of Garosu-gil, applying a refined palette and bold exterior treatment to harmonize with the surrounding streetscape.
The design features high-gloss metallic finishes paired with clean glass façades, enhancing the building’s street presence while reflecting the lively movement of the neighborhood.
Interior material selection and spatial configuration were also guided by the aim to create a stylish, inviting environment that aligns with the lifestyle and expectations of the area’s visitors.
Ultimately, the project is a fusion of local cultural expression and modern architectural sensibilities, reinforcing Garosu-gil’s role as a trendsetting destination in Seoul.

Design Concept

KYK Architects’ newly commissioned remodeling project
was carried out in Sinsa-dong Garosu-gil,
a hotspot representing the cultural trends of the new generation in Korea,
with the aim of expressing a design that reflects the unique characteristics of the area.
To develop the design concept,
KYK Architects explored Garosu-gil in depth,
studying its streetscape and architectural style to align their ideas.
The distinct charm of the neighborhood—
the vibrant image of lush ginkgo trees,
the dynamic and youthful terrace culture of its cafés and select shops,
and the trendy color codes favored by the younger generation—
were chosen as the main concept for this remodeling project.
These elements were applied to both the exterior and interior material selections.

Parking Lot / Flagstones and Grass

The vivid yellow brick exterior creates a bold and cheerful visual impact, instantly distinguishing the building within its urban surroundings.
This vibrant color choice conveys energy, creativity, and modernity, while also evoking a warm and welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
The precise brickwork adds texture and depth, enhancing the façade’s architectural presence.

Terraces

The terraces, with their clean black railings, offer both visual contrast and functional outdoor space.
They introduce layers to the façade, breaking the monotony of flat walls while providing residents or guests a comfortable spot to enjoy fresh air.
Their strategic placement maximizes natural light and views, further contributing to the building’s lively and open character.

Folding Door

With a refreshing sense of openness and a refined view, folding doors enhance interior aesthetics.
They allow an entire wall to be opened up, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.
This design is effective for expanding space, offering excellent insulation against heat and cold, and improving energy efficiency.
On pleasant days, opening the doors creates a relaxed indoor environment connected to the outdoors.

Premium Design Single Door

This is not a standard door commonly found on the market,
but a premium design single door that was directly designed
and custom-made by KYK Architects Co., Ltd.

Parking Lot / Flagstones and Grass

Breaking away from conventional parking lot designs, irregularly shaped flagstones were used to create a natural look and feel.

Veranda / Basement Access Stairs

The boundary with the adjacent building was designed in the form of a veranda using treated wood, while the floor and stairs were also constructed with treated wood to preserve a natural aesthetic.
The treated wood was painted three times with oil stain to enhance its depth and texture.

Vibrant Openness of Garosu-gil, Sinsa-dong

Garosu-gil in Sinsa-dong offers a sense of openness and sophistication that naturally draws a young crowd.
Lined with long rows of trees and stylish shops, the street fills you with inspiration as you walk.
Cafés, restaurants, and fashion boutiques blend seamlessly, allowing visitors to enjoy both trends and relaxation.
It is more than just a commercial street—it is a stage for sharing inspiration and embracing a creative lifestyle.
