Located in the dense urban fabric of Gangnam, Seoul, the Hakdong Medical Office Building reinterprets the vertical tower typology through a series of stacked voids and terraces. Designed in 2022, this project proposes a new model for hybrid programs — integrating medical functions with office use in a compact footprint.
The massing is composed of vertically stretched volumes carved by a sequence of recessed terraces, each layer articulating a different spatial program. These intentional voids not only introduce natural light deep into the building but also provide landscaped pockets for pause and visual relief amidst the city's density.
The dark-toned façade emphasizes verticality and contrast, while its controlled asymmetry adds tension and movement to the overall form. Large glazed portions strategically punctuate the envelope, ensuring both transparency and privacy depending on orientation and function.
Positioned at 208-6 Nonhyeon-dong near Hakdong Station, the building asserts its presence as a contemporary landmark while remaining highly contextual. It balances clinical precision with spatial generosity — a thoughtful response to the evolving needs of urban healthcare and workspace.
